Dear Friend,
My interest in politics arose out of circumstances. Although I have been a carer of people all my working life, my political footsteps started only about five years ago.
As soon as friends and colleagues discover my passion about politics, they want to know why I have become so involved.
Here are some of my main reasons: anger with the declining ability of a heavily politicised NHS to meet burgeoning health demands, frustration with the vast and incompetent management and sheer incredulity at the unimaginable wastefulness of resources.
Then, there are flawed policies, responsible for diverse problems such as rising MRSA cases and ward closures from mounting cash crises; the Bradford Royal Infirmary was reported to have a £11.3 million deficit in March 2005.
If you care to find the time, I will tell you all the scandalous policies introduced by this Labour Government. Such as treatment targets that dehumanise people and patients, bureaucratic pressures that interfere with the clinical focus of doctors, and uncontrollable proliferation of managers and quangos.
There are innumerable horror stories. Like a recent case I know personally where a 29-year old mother of two who had to wait 15 hours in a chair in Casualty before she could have tests to confirm a brain haemorrhage, then waited for another day to be transferred to another city over 30 miles away where she was operated but, tragically, she died.
In short, I could no longer bear the thought of Labour wasting precious resources, ruining our health system and offer a healthcare service that is below the standards found in many lesser countries. The NHS is just hanging together against all odds through the dedication and goodwill of many healthcare professionals, not because of any commendable government policy. But it can’t go on like this much longer.
So I say to my colleagues and friends, I do not want to complain about the parlous situation. I want to do something about it.
As senior police surgeon to the Leicestershire Constabulary with over 20 years of service, I was also privileged to be able to appreciate and understand at first-hand the problems of crime, and the perspectives of offenders and their victims. The worsening problems and difficulties confronting the police service convinced me that something substantial must be done soon, before real anarchy sets in.
My police colleagues are bogged down with nonsensical targets, increasing volumes of unnecessary paper work and needlessly ponderous political correctness. They are also short on manpower.
The unprecedented levels of unprocessed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants add a dangerous strain on the stability of our society, not only by challenging the infrastructure systems but also through threatening our national heritage of tolerance.
Many of my patients, Whites and Asians alike, often chat to me and express their upset at being let down by the government. “Why should these immigrants who have no right to be here get benefits which we have paid for, and why should we miss our turn in the queue because of them?”
We need a fair approach to future immigration, protect the rights of all the British peoples and maintain the stability of our country.
The public is not stupid, and certainly not unknowing of the enormity of the problems of illicit drugs, crime, and immigration.
What about youngsters who are let down by feckless educational policies? Where are we heading as a nation? We must have a robust policy for restoring discipline in schools, so that our children grow up to be responsible members of society. The Labour Government has been so soft on so many things, and we will pay a high price for the malaise and its failures. I want to work to improve the educational standards in Bradford schools.
As a GP, I have literally and socially, a finger on their pulse. I have seen the relentless attrition of the care and provision for the pensioners and elderly people. Come round with me on my home visits, and the examples are there. You may even be one of the many unfortunate ones, or know someone in such a predicament.
I only want to champion the peoples’ causes the way governments should, through stewardship. Not obsessive control and interference that Labour is so keen on. It is also not the Liberal Democrats’ way either, where stewardship is clearly lacking and everything is “anything goes”!
In a democracy, we must be able to enjoy freedoms within the law, receive protection and give care to our less fortunate fellow citizens, be encouraged to higher endeavours, flourish in peace and harmony, and exercise our financial autonomy.
In short, I believe in Conservative principles.
And I am here to serve you, if elected your Member of Parliament. Your valued vote is vital to my fulfilment of that role.
Thank you for taking time and showing an interest in my web pages. I hope to hear from you soon.
With best wishes,
Yours respectfully,
Teck Khong
